Personas + behaviour
Persona
A persona is the configured identity of an avatar, including its role, tone of voice, appearance, behaviour, knowledge boundaries, and rules for how it should respond to users.
How personas work
A persona defines how an avatar should present itself and behave. It can include the role, tone of voice, domain knowledge, boundaries, visual identity, voice and rules for when to escalate.
In a real-time avatar system, persona is not just branding. It shapes the agent's instructions, the voice selected for speech, the avatar's appearance and the conversational behaviours the user experiences.
A concrete example: a sales persona might be concise, commercial and demo-oriented, while an onboarding persona might be patient, step-by-step and more educational.
The strongest personas are specific. "Helpful assistant" is usually too broad; "technical onboarding guide for developers connecting a WebRTC avatar API" gives the model and the product much clearer boundaries.

Frequently asked questions
What is a persona in an avatar agent?
A persona defines who the avatar is meant to be in the interaction, including its role, tone, expertise, boundaries, voice, and how it should behave with users.
Is persona just the avatar's appearance?
No. Appearance matters, but persona also includes language, confidence, warmth, pacing, domain knowledge, escalation behavior, and what the avatar should avoid doing.
How specific should an avatar persona be?
Specific enough to guide consistent behavior, but not so scripted that the avatar becomes rigid. Good personas define principles, examples, and boundaries rather than every possible line.
Can a persona change for different users?
Yes. A product can pass context into the session so the avatar adapts by audience, language, task, or brand, while keeping the same safety rules and business constraints.
