# Avatar personalization

> Create avatar variants in Anam Lab with custom prompts and reference images, then use the new avatar in a persona.

Create a new version of an existing avatar by describing the changes you want. You can change its clothing, background, or visual style, and attach a reference image to guide the edit. Add your brand or company logo to the avatar’s apparel or background to create a branded variant.

Personalization starts from an existing avatar image and creates a separate avatar. It does not overwrite the original. To start from your own photo instead, see [Create a custom avatar](/docs/personas/avatars/custom-avatars).

## See it in action

</Frame>

## Before you start

* Open the [Avatar tab in Anam Lab](https://lab.anam.ai/build?tab=avatar).
* Choose an avatar with a source image available. The **Create variant** action is available for both stock and custom avatars that have an image.
* Image edits share your organization’s daily AI image-generation allowance, and creating the finished avatar requires an available custom-avatar slot.

## Create an avatar variant

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the original avatar">
    Open the avatar’s three-dot menu and select **Create variant**. Lab opens its source image in the creation preview.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe your changes">
    Enter a prompt in the image-edit field. Describe what to change and what to keep. For example:

    > Change the outfit to a navy blazer over a white shirt. Keep the face, hairstyle, pose, and background unchanged.

    Optionally, use **Attach reference image** to add an image that shows the clothing, background, logo, or style you want. Explain how to use it in your prompt.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Apply and review the edit">
    Select **Edit** and wait for the updated image. Review the result before creating the avatar. You can submit another prompt to refine it, or use the undo and redo controls to compare edits.

    Select **Continue** when you are happy with the image. Entering a prompt alone does not apply it: select **Edit** first if you want that change included.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the avatar">
    Give the variant a descriptive name, such as “Navy blazer — office,” and select **Create**. Wait for avatar generation to finish. The image preview is not a usable avatar until this step completes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use the variant">
    Select the new avatar for your persona in Lab and test it in a conversation. For an integration that uses an avatar ID, copy the new avatar’s ID from its card and use it in your persona configuration. The original avatar and the new variant have different IDs.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Write a focused prompt

Specify the visual change rather than the avatar’s conversational behavior. Start with one change so you can evaluate the result before adding more.

* **Clothing:** “Replace the jacket with a dark green sweater. Keep the face and background unchanged.”
* **Background:** “Replace the background with a bright office and a plain light-gray wall. Keep the person unchanged.”
* **Style:** “Render the avatar in a 3D animated character style, keeping the hairstyle and clothing colors.”

If you want to preserve the original appearance, name the details that should stay the same. Review the generated image rather than assuming every detail will be preserved.

Keep the face clearly visible and leave space around the head and shoulders. See [Custom avatar best practices](/docs/personas/avatars/custom-avatar-best-practices) for framing guidance.

## Guide an edit with a reference image

You can attach one reference image at a time in JPG, PNG, or WebP format. Attaching another image replaces the current reference.

To brand the avatar’s apparel or background, use an image of your brand or company logo as the reference. Specify where the logo should appear in your prompt, such as on a shirt or on the wall behind the avatar.

The avatar is the source image; the attachment is a second image that guides the edit. Include a text prompt even when you attach a reference, and refer to the attachment as the “second image.” For example:

* **Match an outfit:** “Match the clothing to the second image. Keep the avatar’s face and hairstyle unchanged.”
* **Use a background:** “Replace the background with the setting in the second image. Keep the avatar unchanged.”

Choose a reference where the relevant detail is easy to see. Inspect logos, clothing details, and the face in the result before selecting **Continue**.

## If you cannot continue

* **No Create variant action:** Choose an avatar with an available source image.
* **Image edit unavailable:** Check the plan or generation-limit message shown in Lab.
* **Reference image rejected:** Use JPG, PNG, or WebP. If Lab reports that the image is too large, try a smaller image.
* **No custom-avatar slots available:** Free a slot or upgrade your plan before creating another avatar.
